The Boardwalk

The former Berkey & Gay Furniture Company had been sitting idle in Grand Rapids for nearly 50 years. In 2001, this 400,000 square-foot building was renovated into a mixed use complex containing 262 market rate apartments, 100,000 square-feet of commercial office space and a full-service restaurant.

The building was stripped to the base walls. All of the windows—1,500 total—were replaced with custom windows designed to closely match the existing window profiles.

The building was actually six separate buildings constructed over a 30-year period. Two interior courtyards were landscaped to provide both entertainment and quiet reflection.

This project became the catalyst of redevelopment along the North Monroe Street corridor and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was also selected for the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation in 2004 as well as the Michigan Historic Preservation Network Award.
